The ritz decorations for everyday tableware developed by Hedwig Bollhagen are an objectification of ceramic tradition. The typical Bollhagen decorations are created using a special technique and are highly recognizable:
A thin, black layer of clay is applied to the raw, leather-hard shards before the first firing process. Ceramic artists and ceramic painters then carefully scratch geometric or asymmetrical patterns and details into the surface by hand, thereby partially exposing the lighter color of the raw clay shards. The two-tone decoration is then glazed transparently.
Hedwig Bollhagen was co-founder and namesake of the HB ceramics workshops, which have been producing handcrafted tableware and building ceramics in Marwitz, Brandenburg, since 1934.

On its own website, the HB workshop writes:

"The influence of the Bauhaus on Hedwig Bollhagen is particularly evident in the original decorations of the HB-Ritz series. They are applied to the pure clay shards with black slip, refined using the sgraffito technique and glazed transparently. The result is patterns with a high recognition value that reveal Hedwig Bollhagen's extraordinary talent for elevating form through decorations. With its incomparable elegance in black and sand-colored decorations, the Ritz collection has now gained worldwide attention."
