In 1955, Hans-Maria Wingler met Walter Gropius at the opening of the Ulm School of Design. Together, they networked with former Bauhaus students who emigrated or fled during the Nazi era. In 1960, Wingler founded the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, which houses and researches the world's largest collection on the Bauhaus to this day.

For the 60th anniversary of the Bauhaus Archive, the book by Hans-Maria Wingler and Christian Wolsdorff was published; on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Bauhaus, it was reissued.
