The poster for the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition is a Bauhaus icon—and certainly the most famous Bauhaus graphic.
The graphic artist Joost Schmidt adopted the stylized head from the Bauhaus logo, designed by Oskar Schlemmer. He incorporated it into a composition of geometric shapes and correspondingly designed characters. The graphic appears to have been playfully thrown together; the tilt to the left makes the figure float on the surface. Overall, Joost Schmidt's design achieves a very harmonious overall form.
Oskar Schlemmer created comparable compositions with his reliefs from these years.
The Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin collection contains two of these posters. One of them has an additional sticker with the revised exhibition dates: "Opening postponed to August 15 - September 30."
The original poster measures 60.5 x 48 cm; the motif was enlarged for printing.
