UNI is a simple yet remarkably contemporary coat rack, designed by Ferdinand Kramer around 1954 as part of a product family for the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University-Frankfurt.
Ferdinand Kramer (January 22, 1898 – November 4, 1985) was an architect and modern designer born in Frankfurt. In retrospect, Kramer is regarded as an outstanding representative of minimalist architecture and design. Durability, practical utility, sensitively balanced proportions, and perfect craftsmanship characterize the furniture from his various life phases.
Since 1925, Ferdinand Kramer worked at the Municipal Building Department in the "Typification" division on the internationally recognized social reform city planning program "New Frankfurt" by Ernst May. Some of the furniture designed by Ferdinand Kramer during that time was exhibited in 1927 at the legendary exhibition "The Dwelling" in the Weißenhof Estate Stuttgart. Under the direction of Mies van der Rohe, it was groundbreaking for the development of modern architecture. From 1938 to 1952, Ferdinand Kramer lived in exile in New York. Especially his "Knock-Down" furniture, precursors to contemporary "flat-pack" furniture, demonstrate his engagement with the American way of life.
In 1952, Ferdinand Kramer was appointed building director of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and designed the interiors for the 23 university buildings he planned and realized, which shaped the appearance of the Frankfurt University in the post-war period.
