At the same time as the Bauhaus building in Dessau was constructed, residential buildings for the Bauhaus masters, the Masters' Houses, were built nearby in 1926.
Based on a design by Walter Gropius, three semi-detached houses—which can be seen in the design—and a single house for the director were created.
The color scheme for the three semi-detached houses was designed by Alfred Arndt. The perspective is unusual: the houses are shown from below.
The exterior walls are painted in pastel tones—light yellow, pink, and light gray. In contrast, the overhangs, undersides of balconies, window reveals, downpipes, and railings are painted in bright red and blue.
The color scheme shown on the poster was not implemented. Walter Gropius had the exterior of the houses painted in clear white. The likely reason for this was to emphasize the clear cubic forms most distinctly.
Alfred Arndt’s design is part of the collection at the Bauhaus Archive Berlin.
