The poster for the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition is a Bauhaus icon – and certainly the most famous Bauhaus graphic.
The graphic artist Joost Schmidt took the stylized head from the Bauhaus logo, which Oskar Schlemmer had designed. He inserted it into a composition of geometric shapes and correspondingly designed characters. The graphic appears to have been playfully thrown together; the figure floats on the surface due to the tilt to the left. Overall, Joost Schmidt's design creates a very harmonious overall form.
Oskar Schlemmer created comparable compositions with his reliefs from these years.
There are two of these posters in the collection of the Bauhaus Archive Berlin. One of them has an additional sticker with changed exhibition dates: "Opening postponed to 15 August - 30 September".
The original poster has the format 60.5 x 48 cm, the motif was enlarged for printing.
