Designer: Hedwig Bollhagen

The incised decorations for everyday tableware developed by Hedwig Bollhagen are a more objective interpretation of ceramic tradition. The typical Bollhagen decorations are created using a special technique and are highly recognizable:
Before the first firing, a thin, black layer of clay is applied to the raw, leather-hard shards. Ceramicists and ceramic painters then delicately scratch geometric or asymmetrical patterns and details into the surface, partially revealing the lighter color of the raw clay shards. The two-tone decoration is then glazed transparently.
Hedwig Bollhagen was co-founder and namesake of the HB-Werkstätten für keramik (HB Ceramics Workshops), which has been producing handcrafted tableware and building ceramics in Marwitz, Brandenburg, since 1934.

On its own website, the HB workshop writes:

"The influence of the Bauhaus on Hedwig Bollhagen is particularly evident in the original decorations of the HB-Ritz series. They are applied to the pure clay shards with black slip, refined using the sgraffito technique, and glazed transparently. The result is highly recognizable patterns that reveal Hedwig Bollhagen's extraordinary talent for elevating form through decoration. With its incomparable elegance in black and sand-colored decoration, the Ritz collection has now gained worldwide attention."
