Geniuses and Total Work of Art
The Most Famous Art School of Modern Times
Between two world wars, in just 14 years, the Bauhaus changed modern times. The school for art and design, guided by utopian ideals, brought together art, craft, and technology and applied this holistic concept to painting, sculpture, design, building art, film, photography, textile making, pottery, theatre, and installations.

The artist collective with outward impact was at the same time a close personal community. The school was founded by Walter Gropius (1883-1969), and among its members were Josef and Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, Marianne Brandt, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. At all three successive locations of the school in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin, there was lively creative exchange between the students and teachers, who all followed different artistic styles and preferences, yet were united in their idealism and the pursuit of a “total work of art.”

This volume celebrates the innovative power of the Bauhaus movement, which fueled modern times with its avant-garde ideas and in art education emphasized broad freedom of artistic expression as well as the union of function and beauty.
