The tubular steel furniture by Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) is considered outstanding design objects of the 20th century. However, the development from the first prototype to early serial production is largely unknown. An important role was played by Breuer's compatriot Kálmán Lengyel (1900–1945), to whom this comprehensive publication is dedicated.
Together they founded the company Standard Möbel in 1927 to organize the serial production and distribution of tubular steel furniture. The development of the company and the work of Breuer, Lengyel, and the later managing director Anton Lorenz are extensively presented based on previously unpublished archival material. As an important furniture designer and architect, Lengyel also founded his own furniture brand Ka-Le-Möbel, worked as an interior architect in Paris, and built in Berlin, Szeged, and Budapest.
This publication expands the knowledge about the early tubular steel furniture and sheds light on the life and work of the involved protagonists.
