Bauhaus chess pieces existed in a wide variety of forms during the Bauhaus years; the most radical solution to this design challenge is now produced by Naef: All pieces are assembled from simple, elementary bodies. The new shapes are intended to demonstrate function—the possible movements in a chess game. There is nothing reminiscent of the traditional queen, king, and pawn, and the new pieces no longer have a base.
The board was offered in various versions: from the glass chessboard for the deluxe edition to the multiply foldable version made of cardboard glued to a fabric backing. A simple board with a raised edge was more common, but without the usual designations for the squares.
Around 1980, the Naef company resumed production of chess pieces. At that time, the manufacturer designed a new chessboard appropriate to the radical design—without any borders, numbers, or letters.
The beautiful maple veneer gives the board a particularly elegant surface. The varnish also protects the board from scratches.
