Designer: Hedwig Bollhagen

The engraved decorations designed by Hedwig Bollhagen for everyday tableware are a simple interpretation of the ceramic tradition. The decorations characteristic of Bollhagen are made using a special technique and are easy to recognize.

Before the first firing, a thin layer of black clay is applied to the raw, leather-hard pieces. Ceramicists and ceramic painters then hand-engrave geometric or asymmetrical motifs and details into the surface with great precision, partially revealing the lighter color of the raw clay pieces. The two-tone decoration is then coated with a transparent glaze.

Hedwig Bollhagen was a co-founder of the HB ceramics workshops, which bear her name. Everyday tableware and architectural ceramics have been handcrafted there in Marwitz, Brandenburg, since 1934.
