The sketchbook, the original basis for part of the theoretical instruction at the State Bauhaus in Weimar, formed an essential component of Klee's artistic-didactic concept and that of the institute.
Later, his "Pedagogical Sketchbook" appeared in several English translations. It consists of drawn plates or diagrams with explanatory captions. The original German version was never reissued. Here it is reproduced unchanged and supplemented with introductory pages and an interpretive commentary by Helene Schmidt-Nonne, who was Klee's student at the Bauhaus. Schmidt-Nonne followed Klee's teaching for several years and is deeply familiar with his artistic and pedagogical intentions.
