New publication series ‘Bauhaus Books’ | First volume on Bauhaus women photographers.
With ‘Bauhaus Books’, the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung is launching a new publication series through the Walther and Franz König bookshop’s publishing house. The first volume, ‘Bauhaus Books No. 1 – The Women Photographers’, is being published to mark the exhibition ‘New Woman. New Vision. The Bauhaus Women Photographers’ at the Museum für Fotografie, Berlin (until 4 October 2026).
“Bauhaus Books” opens up access to our world’s largest Bauhaus collection and highlights the Bauhaus’s relevance today for a wide audience. The series’ thematic focus is as diverse as its formats – ranging from handy paperbacks to large-format catalogues: these include exhibition catalogues, publications on exercises from Bauhaus classes, and works addressing specific historical and contemporary research questions.
Bauhaus Books No. 1 – The Women Photographers
To this day, our image of the Bauhaus is largely shaped by photographs. Many of these iconic images were taken by outstanding female photographers whose work, despite its influence, remained overlooked for decades. Their work ranges from portrait and architectural photography, through advertising and photojournalism, to abstract and experimental forms of imagery. ‘The Women Photographers’ presents 25 of these female photographers from our collection for the first time and, through numerous images, offers an insight into a fascinating chapter of rediscovered photographic history.
The female photographers: Gertrud Arndt | Ellen Auerbach | Irene Bayer | Lotte Stam-Beese | Irena Blühová | Marianne Brandt | Lotte Collein | Margarete Dambeck-Keller | Charlotte Grunert | Ise Gropius | Toni von Haken-Schrammen | Florence Henri | Irene Hoffmann | Hilde Hubbuch | Grit Kallin-Fischer | Judit Kárász | Ivana Meller-Tomljenović | Etel Mittag-Fodor | Lucia Moholy | Lony Neumann | Ricarda Schwerin | Ré Soupault | Grete Stern | Elsa Thiemann | Edith Tudor-Hart.
