A sense of beauty combined with functionality. This connection characterizes many of Marcel Breuer's designs, but especially the D4 (formerly B4). The foldable tubular steel club chair with strap upholstery was created in 1926/27 and advertised in the first Breuer tubular steel catalog as “particularly suitable” for ships and sports grounds, as well as for terraces, summer houses, gardens, and garden cafés. This sporty, airy ambiance is inscribed in the design; the D4 still feels light and springy today. Here, the transition to modernity becomes tangible and directs attention to the functional design.
