Designer: Ferdinand Kramer, 1954

UNI is a simple yet remarkably contemporary coat rack, designed by Ferdinand Kramer around 1954 as part of a product family for Goethe University Frankfurt.

Ferdinand Kramer (January 22, 1898 — November 4, 1985) was a modernist architect and designer born in Frankfurt. In retrospect, Kramer is regarded as an outstanding representative of minimalist architecture and design. Durability, practical utility, sensitively balanced proportions, and perfect workmanship characterize the furniture from his various periods of life.

From 1925, Ferdinand Kramer worked at the Municipal Building Authority in the “Typification” department, contributing to Ernst May’s internationally acclaimed socially reformist urban planning program, “New Frankfurt.” Some furniture designed by Ferdinand Kramer during this period was exhibited in 1927 at the legendary “The Dwelling” exhibition in the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart. Under the direction of Mies van der Rohe, it was groundbreaking for the development of modern architecture. From 1938 — 1952, Ferdinand Kramer lived in exile in New York. His “Knock-Down” furniture in particular, a precursor to contemporary “Flat-Pack” furniture, reflects his engagement with the American way of life.

In 1952, Ferdinand Kramer was appointed building director of Goethe University and designed the interiors for the 23 university buildings he planned and realized, which shaped the appearance of Frankfurt University in the postwar period.
