Marianne Brandt's design from 1926 is an example of the development of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus from traditional blacksmithing to the birth of industrial design: the cylindrical ashtray is an object that seems natural for today's ideas of form. Precisely crafted in shape, it can be mass-produced without any manual intervention. The cone of the cylindrical lower part protrudes through the lid as a hemisphere. The conical lid fits exactly on the cone of the cylindrical body. Odors are isolated - an ashtray for smokers and non-smokers alike. This design arose from Brandt's wish that "a thing should be as functional as possible and beautiful in accordance with the material." (oem)
