Like the Bauhaus lamp, Bauhaus chess developed into a design icon - and not without reason. Josef Hartwig designed it according to the following concept: from the imitation of combat to a purely abstract game of the mind. Why does the horse have to look like a horse, a bishop like a bishop or even a bishop? What does that have to do with the function of the game piece on the board? Actually, nothing. Hartwig moved away from pictorial figurines and focused on the function of the game pieces: the basic shapes of dice and sphere, individually or combined, determine the gait, and the volume determines the value of the pieces. The current form, first in production in September 1924, therefore seems essential. The perfectly crafted 32 game pieces are made of maple wood and are packed in a beechwood box. A matching chessboard is available separately. (OEM)
