The program of the famous 'Bauhaus Books' from the 1920s also included a publication by Oskar Schlemmer titled 'Stage Elements'.
However, publishing opportunities dwindled around 1929/30 due to the global economic crisis.
It was not until 1969 that the present volume could be compiled from Schlemmer's estate. The basis is Schlemmer's lecture materials from his 1928 course 'The Human', which he was no longer able to develop into a book. As clearly seen, his conceptual thinking was congruent with that of the Bauhaus, as was the case only with Gropius and Moholy-Nagy. As significant as the problems raised by technology and their resolution were for the Bauhaus—the goal to which everything was subordinated and remained subordinated was the social human being and, despite all social commitment, the individual.
