In the summer of 1910, Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius meet during a spa stay: it is the beginning of an affair that starts as a passionate love story and develops into a complex relationship with ups and downs.

About 400 letters tell the story of the young woman and the architect. Until the death of her husband Gustav in May 1911, Alma Mahler is torn between engaging with his music, her own work as a composer, and her need for freedom. At that time, Walter Gropius had little more to offer than his idealistic visions. The book, accompanied by insightful commentary, makes the entire correspondence from 1910-1914 accessible for the first time and offers a completely new perspective on the dramatic life and work of three central figures of modernism.
