Published in 1925, the book outlines the basic principles of the Bauhaus stage design. The Bauhaus stage is that of the Weimar period; it was significantly shaped by Oskar Schlemmer.
He confronted it with expressionist theater after taking over the stage department in 1923. In the same year, László Moholy-Nagy was appointed to the Bauhaus, who was interested in abstract kinetic and luminaristic phenomena. Farkas Molnár was primarily concerned with stage architecture.
The afterword by Walter Gropius was written in 1961 for the American edition published under the title 'The Theater of the Bauhaus.' In it, he recaps the tasks and achievements of the stage at the Bauhaus and his own experimental work as an architect.
