Designer: Arne Jacobsen, 1967

The shape is defining, not just in its name.

Once Jacobsen’s designs were ready, a long road lay ahead before the Cylinda Line was ready for the market in 1967. Its design created a distinctive look with only the essentials. The logical construction of all the vessels from cylinders and hemispheres is astonishing. The same basic shapes are used for a wide variety of functions. This is reminiscent of Marianne Brandt, who had already designed an entire tableware collection based on the hemisphere at the Bauhaus in 1927.

Initially, preparations for production of the Cylinda Line posed problems. Stainless steel, which is extremely demanding to work with, deforms undesirably at the slightest tool inaccuracies. The manufacturer first had to develop machinery and welding techniques to bring the designs to life, as their stereometric forms make them technically challenging. (oem)
