Designer: Arne Jacobsen

The shape is defining, not just in its name.

Once Jacobsen’s designs were ready, a long journey began before the Cylinda Line was market-ready in 1967. Its design created a distinctive appearance with only the essentials, and the logical construction of all the vessels from cylinders and hemispheres is striking — the same basic forms used for a wide variety of functions, as in the work of Marianne Brandt, for example, who had already designed an entire service range based on the hemisphere at the Bauhaus in 1927.

Initially, the Cylinda Line’s production run-up presented problems: stainless steel is extremely demanding to work with and deforms undesirably if the tools are even slightly imprecise, so the manufacturer first had to develop machinery and welding techniques to produce these technically sophisticated stereometric forms.
