Form is defining, not just in the name.
After Jacobsen’s designs were submitted, a long journey began before the Cylinda-Line was ready for the market in 1967. Its design created a distinctive look with only the essentials. The logical construction of all the vessels from cylinders and hemispheres is astonishing. The same basic shapes were used for a wide variety of functions. Marianne Brandt, for example, had already designed an entire tableware series based on the hemisphere at the Bauhaus in 1927.
Initially, preparations for production of the Cylinda-Line posed problems. Stainless steel, which is extremely demanding to work with, deforms undesirably if the tools are even slightly inaccurate. The manufacturer first had to develop machinery and welding techniques to realize the designs, which are technically demanding precisely because of their stereometric forms. (oem)
