Marcel Breuer's (1902-1981) tubular steel furniture is considered to be one of the outstanding design objects of the 20th century. However, the development from the first prototype to early series production is largely unknown. Breuer's compatriot Kálmán Lengyel (1900-1945), to whom this comprehensive publication is dedicated, played an important role.
Together they founded the company Standard Möbel in 1927 to organize the serial production and distribution of tubular steel furniture. The development of the company and the work of Breuer, Lengyel and the later managing director Anton Lorenz are presented in detail using previously unpublished archive material. As an important furniture designer and architect, Lengyel also founded his own furniture brand Ka-Le-Möbel, he worked as an interior designer in Paris and built in Berlin, Szeged and Budapest.
This publication expands knowledge about early tubular steel furniture and sheds light on the lives and works of the protagonists involved.
